  • Laila Robins at the Guthrie. ] GLEN STUBBE * gstubbe@startribune.com Friday, November 11, 2016 There was a period in the early 2000's when Laila Robins still kept her place in New York, but she spent a lot of time at the Guthrie, where she starred in 'Summer and Smoke,' 'Antony & Cleopatra,' 'Hedda Gabler' and the world premiere of Arthur Miller 'Resurrection Blues.' Then she seemed to disappear from Twin Cities stages, but was still present in our lives. Onscreen, both TV and film, she played a string of dignified, strong women in shows such as an ambassador on 'Homeland,' the mother of a pop star on 'The Good Wife,' and as a White House security officer in the 2015 British thriller 'Eye in the Sky.' It has been a solid living. Now the St Paul native, who has strong family bonds, returns to the Twin Cities to play the queen in 'The Lion in Winter,' which opens Friday at the Guthrie <br />
What's Happening at this time: She's meeting the photograph pre-rehearsal for a foto in front of her ghost image etched into glass on the Guthrie's Level Five. Robins starred in "Summer and Smoke." She will also be available for a shot in the theater, out of costume.

Tattoos are popping up more in real life and on stage, including current Guthrie and CTC productions. How do you get them on? How do you get them off (especially if you don't really want to go for coffee with a swastika on your body, which happened with MN Opera's "Dead Man Walking")? Actor Dwight Leslie will be having temporary tattoos applied for his role in "Last Stop on Market Street," which has a show for schoolchildren that morning. The process involves using a transfer sheet, much like the temporary tattoos anyone can buy, and then touching up with brushes to make the colors more vivid. He'll be assisted by some combo of wig and costume people, including Martha Capers, Robert Dunn and Amy Kitzhaber (I interviewed Kitzhaber for the story).
